The Money for Women/Barbara Deming Memorial Fund provides small grants ($500 -- $2,000) to individual feminist women in the arts with primary residence in the U.S. and Canada. 

Our 2026 grants are limited to the following categories : Visual Art and Fiction.  This application is for FICTION.

NOTE: This year, the submissions portal will close after 250 submissions in each genre, so be sure to send in your materials early.   

 

WE WELCOME     

Applications from feminist writers who are women (cis, transgender, or nonbinary) and:

  • Exhibit high quality and originality in their work
  • Use feminism as their central interpretive lens
  • Value both personal and political changes that stand against the limitations and controls exerted against women and aim at optimum freedom and agency for women
  • Validate differences that overlap with gender such as race, ethnicity and class
  • Express an inclusive vision of social justice while focusing on justice for women

 

WE ARE INTERESTED IN  

Funding projects which you have begun or are well underway, and for which you have substantial work to show.                 

 

PLEASE NOTE, WE DO NOT AWARD

  • Film, video, theatre, dance, music and performance projects, scripts and compositions.
  • We do not award work which is or will be self-published, or work that is generated by AI without acknowledgment or artistic rationale.
  • We do not give loans or provide money for educational assistance, work on dissertations or research (except research to be used in writing a book).
  • We do not provide funds for the cost of editing services, business projects, or emergency money for people in need.
  • We rarely give money to groups.
  • Former grantees must wait three years before reapplying.

  2. Description explaining why you are applying to a feminist fund (max 100 words)

  4. Resume (max 2 pages)

FICTION  -  Upload a PDF version of your FICTION work. Maximum 15 pages with a minimum of 10 pages. Your writing sample should be no smaller than 12 point type and double-spaced. Please paginate and use the header to include your name and project title on the top right corner of each page. Submission Deadline: 11:59pm EASTERN January 31, 2026.

Visual Art Sample: Submit 4 work samples in .jpg format. On a separate .pdf or.doc attachment,  list your images numerically to correspond with the label on the .jpg and include the title, size, medium, and date.  Image specs: Upload 4 images using the file upload in the application. Each JPEG may be no larger than 1600 pixels in any direction. The image resolution must be between 72 and 100 dpi. Each file must be less than 1MB and labeled with the applicant’s last name followed by a period, first initial, underscore and image number corresponding to the same image on your numbered list, for example SMITH.J_1.JPG, SMITH.J_2.JPG.   Submission Deadline:   11:59pm EASTERN January 31, 2026
